I love Dickens but this novel, although highly touted, doesn't cut it, IMO:The story line is very rambling and disconnected - you've got to read hundreds of pages, hoping that maybe he'll tie things together in the end.
The writing is extremely verbose and often difficult to understand. Dickens is always verbose but here even more so, and he's usually much more accessible. Some of the material in OMF is genuinely obtuse.
The book is full of characters, all of whom Dickens seems to hate and look down upon, with the exception of only two or three.
This is Dickens's last complete novel - he was sick and had gone through a terrible shock in a train wreck before he wrote it - it shows.
I got halfway through and put it down, and I usually give DIckens the courtesy of finishing even his longest works.

I've read OMF several times and am listening to it on audio right now. OMF is one of my favorite by Dickens, right behind A Tale of Two Cities and Bleak House. I would agree that there are a lot of characters and that the reader needs patience in following the various story lines to see how they tie together. I would also agree that the tying together requires the reader to suspend disbelief and view the world as a rather small one indeed. Dickens tends to wrap stories, including OMF in a way that is rather pat, but I find that part of the charm and find I can read without too much worry that I'll be faced with a "real life" ending. That's not to say everything is hunky-dory. Dickens, however, is no George R. R. Martin. I'm a big fan of Dickens' characters and enjoy in OMF the two languid lawyers particularly well.
Dickens at his most verbose, but still his use of words and phrases is to be admired.
It is easy to read even though the language is a bit archaic.
I sort of guessed the plot some where in the beginning, but it is interesting to see it worked out.
I did not like the format of the soft covered edition at all.
The book is to large and unwieldy and unpleasant to read..
